Milo Austin

"The following article appeared in the Herrin daily newspaper under the caption "Know Thy Neighbor", a feature of the paper.
As it concerns one of Pope county's best known citizens of a few years ago the article is reprinted here ( Herald-Enterprise) for the benefit of Mr. Austin's many friends in this county.
Milo Austin, 84, was born March 18, 1864, on a farm in Pope county and lived on the same farm 81 years and attended public school there.
His parents were Mr. And Mrs. Thomas Austin, and he was one of nine children of which four sisters still living. Mrs. Annie Harper, of Robbs, Mrs. Susie Stone of Glendale, mrs. Minnie Holt, of Macedonia, and Mrs. Estelle Bateman, of Chicago, are his sisters.
Mr. Austin helped his father on the farm until the age of 21. He was then married to India Elles, a neighbor girl, who was the daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Ben Elles. The Austins had five children, two of whom died in infancy. One daughter, Mrs. Kate Richardson, died 11 years ago.
The children living are: Mrs. Hettie Seymour and Van E. Austin, of Herrin. Mr. Austin has nine gradchildren and nine great-grandchildren and was a merchant on Route 2, Golconda, for 15 years, and the rest of his years was spent in general farming.
Mrs. Austin died in 1915. Mr. Austin later married Miss Allie Parmley, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J. W. Parmley, of Golconda.
At the age of 21, Mr. Austin professed faith in Christ and joined the Mt. Zion United Baptist church where his membership still remains. Mr. Austin's hobby is hunting, and he is a great admirer of Hereford cattle and saddle horses. He began attending fairs at the age of 13, and kept this up until the age of 80.
Three years ago the Austins, due to Mr. Austin's age, sold their farm and moved to Herrin. Their home is located at 613 N. 8th Street where they live and enjoy a wonderful friendship with neighbors and friends.
Our neighbor is a great lover of children and enjoys good religious radio programs and good singing."

Milo Austin and his wives are buried in Mt. Zion cemetery.
