"Uncle" Pleas Austin
"Uncle" Pleas Austin, one of Pope County's
oldest and most highly respected citizens, died at his home, near
Rock."
"Uncle" Pleas Austin, of Rock, Ill., was born
January 1, 1845; died September 18, 1922, aged 77 years, 8 months
and 18 days. He was the son of Joshua and Polly Ann Parmely Austin.
His father died and left him when two years old, with his mother
and older brothers and sisters.
At age 16 he professed a hope in Christ which he cherished through
life and talked of in his last days. He was a Civil War veteran,
having enlisted December 31, 1863, in Co. M., 13th Ill. Calvary
and was discharged August 11, 1865.
He was married to Nancy C. Farmer, of Dixon Springs, February
8, 1866 ( Married more than 56 years) To this union were born
12 children: Christy Walter, of Rosebud; Charles G., of Herrin;
Mary Ellis, of Golconda; Lewis, of Glendale; Emma Ellis, of Glendale;
Cyrus, who died at age 3; Edgar, of Benton; Alpha Weaver, of Darlington,
Ind.; Ethel Clements, of Willipa, Wash.; Harlow, of Rock; Clara,
who died at age 4 years and Joshua, of Kansas City, Kansas. He
leaves to mourn his death, a wife, 10 children, 31 grandchildren,
4 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was a member of the Masonic order.
Mr. and Mrs. John Cletcher and Mr. and Mrs. Ammon Farmer
of Dixon Springs, attended the funeral of Uncle Pleas Austin Wednesday."

His monument is located in the Austin Cemetery near Rock.
