Colonel Wellen Palmer
Colonel Wellen Palmer, son of Ben and Mary Schuchardt Palmer,
one of 11 children, was born at Glendale, April 18, 1896 and died
May 5, 1957 at the Veteran's hospital in Marion, Ill., at the
age of 61 years and 17 days.
He was united in marriage to Ruby Gullett October 27, 1922 and
to this union two children were born; John of Glendale and Helen
Holmes of Cairo.
Colonel had a host of friends. He will always be remembered by
his jolly disposition. He was converted and joined the New Liberty
Presbyterian church in his early thirties. He remained a member
there until his death but enjoyed church services elsewhere.
In 1918 he was called to serve in the United States Army for 16
months and was discharged at Camp Grant September 29, 1919. He
was a member of Veteran's of World War 1, Barracks 344, of Union
county, Ill. He was a member of I. O. O. F. Lodge 425, Dixon Springs.
Also the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge 1346 of Anna; a loyal member
to all.
Colonel's occupation was farming, near Glendale until 1945. He
was employed at Anna State hospital in the Mechanical Department.
Glendale and Anna communities have lost a staunch citizen, the
children a loving father and his wife, a devoted husband.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Ruby, of Anna, two children,
John of Glendale and Helen Holmes of Cairo; a son-in-law, Bill
Holmes of Cairo; a daughter-in-law, Mildred Palmer; four grandsons,
Donald, David, and Stevie Palmer and Rickey Holmes; three granddaughters,
Pam and Patsy Holmes and Charlotte Palmer; five brothers, Finis
and Olin of Glendale, August of Evansville, Ind., Benjamin of
Mt. Vernon, Wash., Teko of Seattle, Wash., one sister, Ruth Williams,
of Simpson. Three brothers and one sister preceded him in death.
Only one aunt survives him, Helen Taylor of Carbondale and one
uncle, August Schuhardt of Marion, besides a host of cousins,
nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, at 2 P. M. at the Glendale
Methodist church, Rev. George Phelps officiating, assisted by
Rev. Joe Russell and Rev. Murrell McGowan. Interment in the church
cemetery.
