CLARENCE HIO (BETSY) AUSTIN
Clarence Hio (Betsy) Austin, 90, of Carrier Mills, died
at 11:35 a.m. Monday in the Carrier Mills Nursing Home. He was
a retired miner, a former police magistrate of Carrier Mills having
been the last one to serve and was a former justice of the peace.
He was born in Robbs near Glendale on Aug. 27, 1890, son of the
late Shade and Fannie Moore Austin.
On March 23, 1917 at Walnut Grove Baptist Church, he was married
to the former Nellie Ward, who survives. Also surviving are a
daughter, Mrs. Elsie L. Ammon, Carrier Mills; two sons, John E.
Austin, Carrier Mills and Bob Austin of St. Louis; three grandchildren,
Betsy Ann Evans of Harrisburg, John A. Ammon and Steve D. Austin,
both of Carrier Mills; four great-grandchildren, and several nieces
and nephews. Five brothers and a sister preceded him in death.
Mr. Austin was a member of the Carrier Mills First Baptist Church,
50 year member of Blazing Star Lodge A.F. & A. M. No. 458,
and the American Legion of Carrier Mills. He was a veteran of
World War I. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday
at the James Thornton Funeral Home in Carrier Mills. The Rev.
Joe Daniels will officiate and burial will be in Salem Cemetery
with full military rites by American Legion No. 364, Carrier Mills.
Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, where
the Masonic ritual will be recited at 7:30 tonight.
