George Douglas Wheelis
A wonderful book of many pages filled with deeds of love,
mercy, and kindness closed Tuesday Evening, when the life of one
of Pope County's pioneer citizens took its exit.
George Douglas Wheelis, son of George and Emeline Wheelis, was
born November 20, 1862, departed this life October 11, 1949, aged
86 years, 10 months and 20 days. He passed away in his home near
Rock at 6:10 Tuesday evening.
At the age of 22 he gave his heart and life to the service of
His Master. He united with the Walnut Grove Baptist Church in
Johnson County later moving his letter to the Mt. Zion Baptist
church near Rock.
On February 5, 1880 he was married to Belle Workman. To this union
two children were born. Zora May Vaughn of Brownfield, Ill.;
and W. R. Wheelis of Metropolis, Ill.; also, a granddaughter,
Ethel Guhl of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, who was born and reared in his
home as his own child.
On February 20, 1914 he was married to Margaret Hertter with whom
he spent a long and happy life.
A step-daughter, Mayme Scott, gave up her profession to come home
and care for him in his declining years.
Besides his wife and children he leaves to mourn his passing,
three grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and six great,
great-grandchildren, also a host of other relatives and friends.
He will be sadly missed by his family, his church and his community.
We wish to express our appreciation to our many friends for their
acts of kindness shown us during the illness and following the
passing of our loved one. We especially want to express words
of appreciation to Rev. A. H. Modglin and Rev. Elbert Elam; the
singers and to friends who did the cemetery work. _ The Family
of G. D. Wheelis.
