Harry Ulyssus Kerley


Harry Ulyssus Kerley, son of Dr. and Mrs. A. D. Kerley, was born Mar.26, 1893, in Simpson township; died Dec. 1, 1922, in the hospital at Herrin, Ill., aged 29 years, 8 months and 7 days.
The deceased worked on his father's farm while a boy and attended McKee school, graduating Aug. 29, 1914. He served his country in the World War in Troop H. 303d Calvary, and in Co.C.53d Field Artillery, from June 2, 1918 to Feb. 14, 1919.
He was married to Miss Eula May Baker, of Glendale, Ill., Aug. 27, 1920. To this union one child was born, Frances Ladora, at Cambria, Ill. Harry and Eula began their happy, but short life as husband and wife at Cambria, where Harry was employed with the Madison Coal Corporation, mine No. 12. It was at this mine, at 11o' clock p.m., that Harry was held up and shot by two masked men, while changing dress to go home to his wife and baby. He was taken to the hospital at Herrin, Ill., where he died Dec. 1st, 1922, at 10:45 a. m.
Harry made many friends wherever he went and always appreciated them. He was an obedient son, a true brother and a kind and loving husband and father.
He leaves to mourn his death a wife and baby, a father and Mother, a sister, Mrs, Bertie Anderson, of St. Louis, 5 brothers, Brently E., of Cairo, Arthur E. of Simpson, Tellis T., of New Burnside, Claudy X., of Simpson, and Carney V. of Wartrace, IL. Two brothers, William G., who died Feb. 2, 1897, and Kearney Z., who died Aug. 4, 1899, preceded him in going to their reward.
The deceased, while he belonged to no church, expressed himself as knowing that he could never get well but was not afraid to die.
