Miss Frances A. Stamphill (Stanphill) was born October 1, 1831. In 1850 she was married to Henry Roberts. To this union 11 children were born, 9 of whom are still living, with 44 grand children and 21 great grand children. The husband died in 1892. In 1901 she was married to Jesse M. Smith in Pope County, Ill, who survives her. Deceased became a Christian in early life and lived true to her profession, and was a member of the Baptist church for 30 years. While visiting friends near Eddyville some months ago was taken sick and never recovered; after a long lingering illness her spirit passed out and up to God who gave it, on August 22nd, 1907. But we do not mourn as those who have no hope, for by her consistent life and Christian character we have all reason to believe she is safely housed in heaven, with loved ones gone before. Her devoted husband, 9 children, 1 sister, with a host of friends are left to mourn a mother in Israel, one who was kind and ever ready to minister at the couch of suffering, or do what she could to make life a blessing; but like a ripe shock of wheat, she has been garnered at the age of 75 years, 10 months and 21 days. She was buried near Eddyville (Mt. Zion Cemetery). Her many friends and loved ones have another tie to heaven, and who will no doubt be waiting and watching for them. ____Obituary (THE VIENNA TIMES - Thursday, September 19, 1907 Vienna, Johnson County, Illinois) Submitted by Sue Rowe
