Rolla Nelson, 77, who resided near Grantsburg, died in the Massac Memorial Hospital Wednesday, November 18, 1964 after an illness of several months.
Mr. Nelson was the son of J. H. and Eliza Morgan Nelson and was born in Johnson County, April 15, 1887.
He was married to Osee Choate September 7, 1913. She survives him. Also surviving him are three sons, Maurice Nelson of Grantsburg; Rolla Nelson, Jr., of Wilmington, N. C., and Terry Nelson of Detroit, Mich. A daughter, Mary Eliza, preceded him in death.
Mr. Nelson was a retired school teacher, retiring after teaching 49 years. He was also a school supply salesman, which occupation he followed during vacation time during his teaching career. In addition to these activities he was a part-time farmer. His many interests created for him a wide acquaintance and probably no other person in the county had such a wide aquaintance among school teachers, executives and board members than he. Most of his teaching career was in Johnson and adjacent counties.
He was a member of the Grantsburg Baptist Church, of which he was a deacon. He was also a member of the New Columbia Masonic Lodge.
Funeral services were held at the Grantsburg Baptist Church Saturday, Nov. 21 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Louie Simmons and Rev. John L. Cox officiating. Interment was in the Nelson Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ferris Trovillion, Robert Warmack, Elmer Baity, Lionel Johns, Lloyd Sullivan and Norman Choate. Honorary pallbearers were N. B. Rushing, Tom Warmack, Hugh Hutchison, Louis Horman and John Miller.
