Richard E. Ellis
Richard E. Ellis, son of John and Melvina Ellis, was born
near Rock, Pope County, July 17, 1867, and passed away at his
home in Golconda, Sept. 4, 1948, at the age of 81 years, one month
and 18 days. He is the last of a family of eleven children.
His brothers and sisters were Ben, John, Cass, Green, Jim, Mrs.
Mary Parmley, Mrs. Betsy Moore-Trammel, Mrs. Eupha Grisham and
Mrs. Nannie Rose. All are deceased.
On Dec. 9, 1888, he was married to Miss Mary F. Austin, and to
this marriage were born two sons, Jim, who died in childhood,
and Clarence Ellis, of Memphis, Tenn. Besides his son and aged,
devoted companion, he leaves to mourn his passing one grandson,
Beverly C. Ellis, and two great-grandchildren, Beverly Ann and
Paula Gale Ellis, of Memphis, also, numerous nephews and nieces.
Dick, as he was familiarly known, lived his entire life in Pope
County with the exception of 13 years when he and his family lived
in Dallas, Texas.
While he was not a member of any church, he frequently mentioned
his desire to unite with the Primitive Baptist church. He was
an honest and upright hard working man. He was a good father,
a devoted and faithful husband and an accommodating neighbor.
He had been a member of the I. O. O. F. lodge for about 44 years.
Funeral services were held from the family residence, Monday at
2 p. m. conducted by Rev. Abraham Modglin of Harrisburg. Burial
was in the I. O. O. F. cemetery.
