Louisa Catherine Hertter Mankin
More than fourscore years ago Louisa Catherine Hertter was
born at Waltersburg, Ill., Pope county, on September 4, 1867.
She fell asleep on September 11, 1949 at the advanced age of
81 years and 7 days. She was the daughter of George and Anna
Marie Hertter.
Early in life she married William J. Mankin, Sept. 4, 1886. To
this happy life were born six children, three preceded her in
death, Flora, Otto and Earl. Her husband passed away Dec. 18,
1912
Those living to mourn the death of their mother are: Mrs. Stella
Moyers, Golconda, Ill., two sons, Frank and Grover Mankin of Golconda,
Ill., seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild, besides a
host of other relatives and friends to mourn her loss.
In her early married life she consecrated her life to God, and
proved a leader to her church activities as long as her health
permitted. She was one of the leaders and charter member of the
Ladies' Aid then.
"Aunt Lou" as nearly everyone called her, was a source
of inspiration to everyone with whom she came in contact and was
highly regarded by neighbors and friends.
"Aunt Lou" was affectionately known to all, around her
community where much of her life was spent, with this thought
in mind: "Let me live in a house by side of the road and
be a friend to everyone.
"Aunt Lou" was a great lover of beauty and nature, also
a grower of flowers.
Whatever there was to praise in her children and grandchildren,
"Aunt Lou" enjoyed relating. It has been said that
a boy's best friend is his mother. In years to come the sons
and daughter will arise and call her blessed. What she had was
theirs.
