William S. Watson, Sr.

By the death of William S. Watson, Sr., which occurred Tuesday evening at 8:15 o'clock, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Sutherland, this city, Golconda lost one of its oldest and most highly respected citizens.
By his genial disposition, his tender sympathy for and charity toward his fellowman he won for himself a large circle of admiring friends, who are deeply grieved at his death.
Following is a brief sketch of his life:
William S. Watson, son of John and Elizabeth Watson was born Oct. 5, 1845, near Tiffin, Ohio, and died June 15, 1926, aged 80 years, 8 months and 10 days.
He came to Pope County with his parents when a young man of nineteen and has lived here ever since, loved and respected by all who knew him.
In 1871 he was married to Nancy Elizabeth Mitchell Hodge and to this happy union five children were born, all of whom survive him. They are James M. and William S. Watson and Mrs. Dora Sutherland of Golconda. Oliver S. and John D. of Hemit, Calif.
His wife departed this life in 1891, leaving him to care for his children, which duty he faithfully performed. The last twenty years of his life he has resided with his faithful and devoted daughter, Mrs. Sutherland.
He has two sisters living, Mrs. Flora Unser, of Green Springs, Ohio, and Mrs. Tillie Unser, of Tiffin, Ohio, and five grandchildren, Paul and Homer Watson, of Hemit, Calif., William, Edward and Margaret Watson, of Golconda, and other relatives, together with a host of friends, to mourn his departure.
Mr. Watson professed faith in Christ many years ago and since has lived a quiet, patient Christian life.
'Neath our eyes he faded quickly
Growing day by day more frail,
Very sweetly bore all his sufferings
Without murmur, moan or wail.
His cheering smile and loving way
Are pleasant to recall.
He had a kind word for everyone,
And in our hearts he lingers still.
And as long as life and memory last
We shall remember him.

Funeral services will be at the late home at 2 o'clock this afternoon, interment following in the I. O. O. F. cemetery.
