Harriet A. Bayes was born near Cottage Grove, Saline county,
Ill., Sept. 29, 1839; died at the home of her son E. D. Upchurch,
near Raum, Ill., at the ripe old age of 86 years, 10 months and
5 days. She professed a hope in Christ at an early age and united
with the Primitive Baptist church at Cottage Grove, at the age
of 18 years. She was married to Thos. Upchurch March 18, 1859.
the husband preceded her in death about 30 years ago. To this
union were born 7 children, namely: Martha, who preceded her in
death about 15 years ago; Oscar and Edwin, who died in infancy;
Jonathan, who died about 22 years ago; Ellis D., of near Raum,
Huldah, of Broughton, Ill; and Asro, of Detroit, Mich. She leaves
to mourn her death 3 children, 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren
and a host of other relatives and friends. She was a kind and
affectionate mother, a loving grandmother and a friend to all
who knew her. She was afflicted for the past three years and
for a long time was almost helpless. her death was a peaceful
relief from her sufferings and our loss is her eternal gain.
Funeral services were held at Old Grandpier church, conducted
by Eld. N. A. Rodgers, of Simson /Simpson (?), in the presence
of many friends and relatives, after
which the remains were laid to rest in the cemetery nearby to
await the resurrection.
