Rev. D. A. Ledbetter
CREAL MINISTER PASSED AWAY
The call of Death Comes to Rev. D. A. Ledbetter Creal Springs
Minister.
By D. H. Barnwell
Creal Springs, Il. July 31, l926
For the third time in a few weeks the angel of death has invaded
the circle of minister in Creal Springs and last Monday night
at eleven o'clock called from the scenes of earth the Rev. Doctor
Allen Ledbetter, thus removing another one of our very best citizens.
The deceased, A son of D. J.
Ledbetter and wife was born in Hardin county August 12. 1852
passed away at his Creal Springs home July 26, 1926 at the age
of 75 years ll months and14 days.
He was married to Sarah J. Gullett in 1880 and to this union
was born the following children; Robert of Anna, Adrian of Kankakee,
Mrs Emma Dodds of West Frankfort, Mrs Rae Patterson of Chicago,
and James of Cherokee, Ia.
Mrs Ollie Thomas and Mrs Della Holloway are deceased.
He heard the call of his country in 1892 and became a volunteer
in the
defense of the flag in the war with Spain and served with honor
both to
himself and his country.
He professed faith in Christ early in life and became a member
of the
General Baptist Church and for twenty years was a devout minister
of the Gospel ever serving his Master in that faithful and conscientious
manner characteristic of the true servant of the Lord. He leaves
in sorrow his companion, children above mentioned and one sister
Mrs Mary Ann Thornton of Elizabethtown, twelve grandchildren,
on great grand child, and a large circle of near friends. Although
sorrow reigns in the home at his going,"We weep not as those
who have no hope." but realize that our great loss is his
eternal gain. His tired body abide in a well earned rest while
his spirit has returned to his Maker. May each of us be prepared
to meet him again when our call comes to go. Peace to the memory
of the good Christian man..
A short service was conducted at the residence on Wednesday evening
by the writer, and which was attended by a large number of neighbors
with the near relatives of the deceased. The other local ministers
present and taking part were George Smothers who prayed. J. T.
Davidson added a few well placed words of tribute, and J. R.
Tucker closed with prayer. Several familiar songs were rendered
by a good choir. The service was brief but very impressive throughout.
On Thursday morning the long journey was made to the old home
vicinity in Hardin county and where the funeral proper was held
in the Central church attended by a well filled house of his life-long
friends and kindred. Ministers R. J. Reed and A. J. Clayton,
for many years
associated with him in the ministry conducted the service both
of whom made short talks and well laden with instructions, inspiration,
and comfort, the writer taking part also. There were a member
of beautiful floral sprays from friendly sources. The burial
was made in the cemetery near the church where his sacred remains
sleep in the quiet sleep of death while his spirit is with the
God who gave. On the resurrection morning his body will come
forth reunite with the spirit and all fashioned like unto the
glorious body of his Lord will live forever in the house of the
blest.
All the children except one son, James of Cherokee, Iowa, with
other near relative and kinsmen from out of the vicinity were
present for the funeral.
