Didamie Burnett
Didamie Burnett, of Bloomfield township, Johnson County was born in Bowling
Green, Ky., March 8, 1839. Died at her home on last Tuesday, June 27,
1933, age 94 years, 3 months and 19 days. The funeral was held at the
home on Wednesday afternoon conducted by Eld. Bruce Ramsey of Pittsburg,
Illinois. Burial was on the home lot at Casey Springs cemetery.
The deceased was the daughter of Wm. and Elizabeth Robertson, who were
natives of Virginia and Kentucky, respectively. In this family were two
sisters, Mary Marcum and Martha Robertson, now deceased, and four brothers,
LaFayette, Thomas, Samuel and William E. Robertson, all deceased except
William E., or “Sonnie” of Joplin, Mo.
Grandma Burnett, as she was usually called, immigrated from Kentucky in
1851 at the age of 12 years of age and was married to Asahel Burnett,
now deceased, in the year of 1854 and to this union an only child was
born, Marcus L. Burnett, Now living at Vienna, Ill., who was born October
12, 1855.
There are four grandchildren, Breese Burnett of Granite City, Ill., Chloe
Nickolson of Oakland, Calif., Earl Burnett of Jackson, Miss., and Sadie
Sharp of Anna, Ill.; also, three great-grandchildren, Howard, son of Breese,
Gladys, daughter of Chloe and Sylva, daughter of Sadie.
The deceased professed faith in Christ early in life and was a member
of Friendship Baptist church for over forty years. She has lived at her
home, known as the Asahel Burnett farm for seventy-eight years.
Besides the care of her only son, she adopted Mary Connell at three years
of age, where she made her home until she died at the age of 53. Two of
her grandchildren, Earl and Sadie, whose mother died when they were only
3 years and 1 year of age, respectively were taken in and reared with
the same good care and love as her own and to whom she looked to and received
her care in her remaining years.
Grandma has not only lived a long, useful and active life but one of
comfort and great companionship. All up through these latter years the
expressions of Aunt Damie and Aunt “Sis,”
grandma will remain in the hearts of all her kin and neighbors. Never
did she quit; never did she tire; never did she turn down that motherly
help to those about her. Poor in many worldly possessions, but so abundantly
rich with the possessions of tenderness and care and the simplicity of
a good Christian life. But now tired and worn of the tolls of many years,
she peacefully and easily slipped away for her great reward.
As we loved you, so we miss you,
In our memory you are near,
Loved, remembered, longed for always
Bringing many a silent tear.
Card of Thanks
We wish to thank our neighbors and friends who so generously and willingly
helped in the care and burial of mother and grandma.
