Edgar Leo Anthis

Edgar Leo Anthis, the son of James Lark Anthis and Mary Ellen Moyer, was born June 21, 1912 in Pope County near Delwood, Ill.
He had been in failing health for a number of years and bore his affliction with patience, but time caught up with him and he became seriously ill. He was admitted to Massac Memorial Hospital, December 7, 1973, but God saw fit to call him home Wednesday, December 19, 1973, having attained the age of 61 years, five months and twenty-eight days.
On July 18, 1940, he was united in Holy Matrimony to Esta Baker of Glendale, Ill., and to this union one child was born, a daughter, Lou Ellen, who died in infancy.
Except for a period of five years, his entire life was spent in Pope County.
He was a graduate of Carrier Mills High School and held a S. S. degree from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Ill. Thirty- seven years of his life were lovingly devoted to molding young lives of children in the classroom. He taught 24 years in Pope County, 6 years in Massac County and 5 years in Douglas County. He and his companion worked side by side, sharing the same vocation for 29 years, until she was forced to retire in 1968 because of ill health. He retired in 1972 for the same reason.
Approximately three years after moving to Brownfield, Ill., in 1943 under the influence of the Rev. Harry Garrett, who was pastor of the Brownfield Southern Baptist Church at that time, he was made to realize his lost condition and accepted Christ as his Saviour, joined said church, where he remained a devoted member , except for a period of five years when he became a member of the Arthur, Ill. Southern Baptist Church.

He enjoyed life to its fullest and had a keen sense of humor. He had numerous friends and never knowingly betrayed a trust. He was grateful to God, and gave Him the glory for all his blessings.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and four brothers.
Those who survive are his wife, Esta; one sister, Beulah Anthis; several cousins; two brother-in-laws and two sister-in-laws; three nieces and nine great-nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved dearly.
He will be sadly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Card of Thanks

Thanks to all our neighbors and friends in Pope and Massac counties for the lovely Get Well cards and flowers while our loved one was hospitalized, and after his death, for the cards of condolence, the flowers, telephone calls and other offers of help; for the beautiful music rendered by Dr. Paul L. Trovillion, Jr., accompanied by Mrs. Lynette Hirstein at the organ, and for the congregational hymn led by Dr. Trovillion; for the comforting words of the ministers, the Rev. Bill Christoff of Metroplis, Ill., and the Rev. Fleming, pastor of the Brownfield Baptist Church, where the funeral services were held; for the pallbearers and all others who helped in anyway.
Special thanks to the Rottman Funeral Service , Golconda, for their help in making all the necessary arrangements easier for us, and for getting the road to the cemetery cleared of the snow.
Very special thanks to Mrs. Lorraine Hill for having a warm meal ready for our family, other relatives and friends, when we returned from the cemetery, and for cleaning up after the meal. Also a special thank you to the Rev. and Mrs. Willie Thomas and family for extending a warm invitation to Beulah and me to have Christmas dinner with them. We gratefully accepted the invitation _otherwise the day would have been a very bleak one for us.
Your kindnesses were nice and lovely and we are sure God will bless each of you in His own way.
