Abraham H. Ragains

A.H. Ragains, son of David Ragains, was born in Madison County, Tenn., Dec. 22, 1837 and died in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Simmons ( his Daughter) at Kankakee, Ill., Dec. 25, 1927; aged 90 years and 3 days.
He came from Tennessee when 16 years of age, professed faith in Christ at the tender age of 17 and joined the Baptist church at County Line, where he remained a true and faithful member.
He was married to Nancy Ann Levens April 22, 1858, and to this union 11 children were born, 6 girls and 5 boys; T. J. Ragains, of Sayre, Okla., Charlie and George, of Kankakee, Ill., Green , of Dixon Springs; Frank, who preceded him in death some four years ago; Mrs. Dozy Modglin, of Golconda; Mrs. Lucy Allard and Mrs. Mary Modglin, of St. Louis, Mo. Cora Walters, of Arkansas; Mrs. Emily Williams, of Flatwoods, and Mrs. Laura Simmons, of Kankakee, Ill. Besides the above children he leaves to mourn his death 77 grandchildren, 85 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
Uncle Abe, as we all called him, is greatly missed by the church and all who knew him. Of late years, on account of his declining health, he was unable to attend the church, but always kept his interest in it and always stood ready to lend a helping hand. He saw some months ago that he was failing rather rapidly and could not be here very long, so he dictated the most of this obituary, and asked when death called him to be brought back home and be laid beside his wife and that his favorite minister and boyhood friend, Elder J. R. Tucker, conduct his funeral service. Just before his death he called his daughter and told her he was ready to go. Relatives and friends gathered to pay the last tribute of respect to one who has lived with them many years, and he was laid to rest in the Kerley cemetery with his beloved companion to await the resurrection morn.
