Nancy Jane Sistler
Gresham
Memorial services were held at 12:00 a.m., Wednesday,
April 18,
at Salli Lynn Chapel in Greenwood Memorial Park, San Diego, Calif., for
Nancy Jane Sistler Gresham, a resident of El Cajon during the past four
years, who died April 15 (1973) at a local hospital after a short
illness.
Nancy Jane Sistler was born January 7, 1887, near Rock in Pope
County, Ill., the third daughter of Thomas William A. Sistler II and
Mary Elizabeth Sistler. She was a descendant of pioneer farmers who
first migrated to Tennessee, and along with the westward expansion
settled in Southern Illinois.
Nancy's grandfather, T.W.A. Sistler I, married Ruth Moab
Holloway ca.1845, and removed with his family to Pope County in 1853,
purchasing large parcels of land here and founding the Sistler Family
if
Southern Illinois.
In 1889, Nancy's parents, T.W.A. Sistler II and his wife Mary
Elizabeth and family settled on a 160-acre farm near Dixon Springs, a
part of which land still remains in the family.
Nancy J. Sistler had three brothers: Dr. A.O. Sistler, M.D., of
Hoopeston, Ill.; Rufus Sistler and Thomas William Sistler, III, both
farmers of Dixon springs; a sister, Ruth, who died in infancy, and a
sister, Mrs. Anna May Escott, Portland, Ore., a teacher.
Nancy attended Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and
taught for several years in Pope County elementary schools.
On January 1, 1909, she married William Gresham of Glendale,
Ill., and in 1919 they and their children moved to Portland. Mr.
Gresham was formerly associated with the Metropolitan Life Insurance
Co., and later with the Oregon State Liquor Control Commission from 1939
to 1954.
He died on March 5, 1964, and in 1969 Nancy went to El Cajon,
California to make her home with her daughter. She was a Portland,
Ore., resident for 49 years. She formerly was a librarian in the
Technical Room at the Portland Downtown Public Library; also served as
a
Republican National Committee-woman in the Hollywood area of that city,
and was a member of the Rose City Methodist church.
Survivors include a son, William Gresham, Jr., Yakim, Wash.; one
daughter, Genevieve M. Nikkel of El Cajon, Calif.; five grandchildren,
six great-grandchildren one nephew and three nieces.
Entombment will be in the Rose City Cemetery and the Mausoleum
of Portland Oregon.
