URIAH
BELFORD
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday,
June 6, at Stone church
in Elizabethtown community, for Uriah Belford, 89, Ridgway, formerly of
Pope County, who died at 4:45a.m., Monday, June 3, 1985 at Pearce Hospital
of
Eldorado.
Mr. Belford, a fluorspar miner for many years who later worked
in construction, was born in Pope County, Sept. 10, 1896. He was the
son of James Monroe and Aquilla Story Belford.
He was united in marriage to Nora Carman at Elizabethtown, Dec.
24, 1923, who survives.
Mr. and Mrs. Belford spent most of their lives in Hardin county,
but moved to Ridgway approximately 6 years ago. He was a member of Mt.
Pleasant Baptist Church, and became an ordained deacon in 1936. He was
made honorary deacon in 1984.
Survivors include his wife, Nora, and two sons, Herschel Belford
and Charles Belford, all of Ridgway. One son, James William Belford,
preceded him in death. Other survivors include 13 grandchildren, four
great-grandchildren, two sisters, Ms. Essie Williams of Bethalto and Ms.
Floya Bebout, Harrisburg, several nieces and nephews, and many other
relatives and friends.
Last rites were conducted by the Rev. Charles Holland of Karbers
Ridge with burial in Stone Church Cemetery. Edwards Funeral Home,
Ridgeway, was in charge of arrangements.
